The tournament was open to the highest-placed European teams that had not qualified for the European Cup or UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. It commenced on 14 September 1971 and concluded on 17 May 1972. The tournament's top scorer was Derek Dougan of runners-up Wolverhampton Wanderers with 9 goals.

One newspaper described this as the "dustbin final" following disgraceful scenes as Blackburn supporters showered Stan Cullis and his players with orange peels, apple cores, plastic cups and general rubbish as they made their way down the Wembley tunnel with the FA Cup.
